What can I do to protect my property after my death?

We work hard all our lives in the hope that one day all our hard work will have paid off and we will have something worth leaving to our loved ones after we have gone.
So what if your home was at risk of being sold towards paying for your care costs?
It does happen, and more frequently than you can imagine.
This is why we can help minimise the risk of losing your home by looking at the way you currently own the property.

Tenants in Common

Most homes are jointly owned and that’s great, but a more efficient way to own a property with someone could be Tenants in Common.
By changing your home to Tenants in Common you are taking steps to minimise the effect of losing your home to repay care costs in the future.
In conjunction with making new provisions in your Will you can then leave your portion to your children so that they can benefit from your estate as you had intended.

Why do I need a Will?

Put simply because every person who make one, will at some point use it. A will is a written representation of who you are and what your wishes are. Not only does a will express who you wish your assets to go to, it can be for so many other important things that could be overlooked such as guardians for minor children or specific funeral wishes.
Dying without leaving a Will means that you die Intestate, and this can cause problems as it means that the government bloodline templates will take effect on the estate. This could also mean that people could inherit the estate that the deceased did not intend to do so, and also cohabiting partners or close friends would be excluded as they would have no legal rights of inheritance.
Making a Will is very important whether you have a large estate of valuable assets, or simply just have one bank account and a small amount of savings.

What does a Will include?

Your Will enables you to select Executors and Trustees who will manage your affairs after your death. There’s no second guessing on what your wishes were.
The distribution of your estate is also contained in your Will, and you can specify who should receive specific personal items, cash gifts or charitable gifts, etc.
